The rule

Four dates on the battery clock — the passport is the one that blocks the market

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 applies to all batteries placed on the EU market. The digital passport is mandatory from 18 February 2027: without it, a covered battery cannot be placed on the market or put into service.

EV batteries need a carbon footprint declaration before placement, covering the full life-cycle footprint of the cell.
