The rule

Four dates on the battery clock — the passport is the one that blocks the market

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 applies to all batteries placed on the EU market. The digital passport is mandatory from 18 February 2027: without it, a covered battery cannot be placed on the market or put into service.

When does the battery passport become mandatory?
From 18 February 2027, each EV battery, LMT battery above 2 kWh and industrial battery above 2 kWh placed on the EU market or put into service must have a battery passport linked by QR code (Art. 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542). [1][2]
Which batteries need a passport?
Electric-vehicle batteries, light-means-of-transport batteries (e-bikes, e-scooters) above 2 kWh, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Portable batteries follow different rules — labelling and removability/replaceability from 2027 — but no passport. [1][2]
What data does the passport contain?
Manufacturer identity, model, capacity, chemistry and materials, carbon footprint, performance and durability, and state-of-health history — plus recycled-content percentages (cobalt, lithium, nickel, lead) from 18 August 2028. The QR code on the battery links to the record. [1][3]
What happens if my battery has no passport?
From 18 February 2027 a covered battery without a passport cannot be placed on the EU market or put into service. Market surveillance can block, restrict or withdraw non-compliant batteries, and penalties are set by each Member State. [1][4]
