MTD is live. Your quarterly updates are due on the 5th.
If your qualifying income is over £50,000, HMRC requires you to send quarterly updates from 6 April 2026 — 5 August, 5 November, 5 February, 5 May. Quartly checks if you're in scope and stamps your four deadlines.
Four updates a year, always on the 5th
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces paper self-assessment for sole traders and landlords in scope. You keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC through compatible software.
In scope from 6 April 2026
If your qualifying income from self-employment and property is over £50,000, MTD applies now. You must sign up and use compatible software. [1]
The threshold drops
£30,000 from 6 April 2027, then £20,000 from 6 April 2028. If you're under £50k today, you're likely on the list — Quartly shows your exact year. [2]
Penalty points, not a flat fine
One point per missed update or return; a £200 penalty kicks in once you reach four points. For 2026-27 HMRC won't issue points for late quarterly updates — but they still apply to late final declarations. [3][5]
